The South American economy, comprising 12 economies, in 2022 is projected around US$3.61 trillion, accounting for 3.5% of the world GDP in nominal terms, $365 billion more than 2021, calculated by taking figures from the IMF. The GDP of South America is equivalent to India’s GDP, the 6th largest economy in the world. South America ranks fourth among continents behind Asia, North America, and Europe. South America is the 2nd smallest continental economy after Oceania in ppp methods, accounting and 4.80% of global wealth.

As per the UN, South America’s share of the world economy was maximum (5.99%) in 2011 and was minimum (2.76%) in 2003. In constant 2015 prices, which gives a better idea about expansion over the years, the South American economy has expanded from $913 bn in 1970 to $3.6 tn in 2019.
